2022.01.24 13:58 RachelEmmaShaw Caring for your mental health as a writer

Unlike an increasing number of other forms of employments with HR departments and public brands to maintain, a writer's life is the wild west so far as mental health goes. Barring a few lucky exceptions, nobody is looking out for your mental health as a writer, which means you have to pay attention and take care of yourself.
I've been writing and publishing for a few years now, and when it comes to taking care of my mental health, there are lots of learnings I've come by the hard way. I hope I can help you with a few of them as you progress on your journey.
1: BE ALERT TO YOUR OWN WRITING HABITS
Everybody writes differently. Some pants, other plot, some speed run, some crawl. There is no one way to write, but you can bet there will be ways that you find easier for you. When they stop working and your habits change, it's time to stop and take note of why.
Notice if you're finding it hard to motivate yourself to write. Or if you're doing the opposite and neglecting every other aspect of your life in favour of writing. Neither is healthy and they will both ultimately result in the same end - you not writing. I've been there for the latter. I neglected friendships, family, homelife, even my body since my diet then was terrible. In the end, I burnt out and ended up incredibly lonely since my friendships had gone neglected for so long, so make sure you check in with yourself regularly and create routines that work for you.
2: REACH OUT TO OTHERS
Most of my friends are writers. This is invaluable. We talk about writing all the time, helping each other out and providing solace and advice to each other, sharing experiences we've been through, so I get fix that writing craving while getting in some social time. We even write together, helping make my writing into a social event, rather than solitary time. This subreddit is a fantastic place to make new writing friends, but don't let that limit you. Check out your local writing groups on MeetUp. Join in with the writing communities on Twitter and every other social media platform out there. Writing is all too often a lonely experience, but it doesn't have to be.
3: TAKE CARE WHEN USING YOUR WRITING AS THERAPY
I use my writing to help me process what's going on in my life, and I'm not the only one. A lot of writers process trauma this way, and it can be great, but it can also be dangerous. After I lost both of my grandfathers within a month, I threw myself into the downward spiral that is now Sacaran Nights. I was so lost in questions of legacy, that I created a world where the living live only to uphold the legacies of the dead. The story helped me process my grief, but for years, I kept digging myself into the pit of darkness and despair that is the world of that book.
The problem? It was only when I finished the book that I realised I had forgotten to leave a rope to climb back out of the pit with. The sequel has basically been me carving a path into the side of the pit and clambering my way up. I've made it back to the top, but it wasn't easy, and nor would I recommend others doing as I did. So if you're using your writing as therapy, then here is my advice. Don't do it alone. Surround yourself with friends/writers who know what you're doing and can help you find your way back out, or at least who can recognise the danger signs of you digging too deeply.
4: RECOGNISE THAT FAILURE IS AN OPTION
Unfortunately, no matter how much your writing might mean to you or have helped you through whatever it is you're going through, that doesn't mean it will necessarily be commercially viable. Every writer should feel empowered to tell whatever story they need to tell to help them work through whatever it is they're working on, but if you're using writing as a form of therapy, then that doesn't mean you'll create something others want to read, or that publishers want to invest in. Write for you. If your manuscript results in a commercially successful book, cool. If not, at least it will have helped you and you'll be in a better place for writing something with more mass appeal next time.
Sidenote - just because whatever you've written doesn't have mass appeal, doesn't mean it's not worthwhile putting it out into the world. I've had some stories published that haven't reached many people, but it's amazing to know the difference it made for those it did reach and for whom it reflected experiences they had been going through.
5: THINK OF YOUR WRITING AS A JOURNEY
It's hard to think beyond your first book, especially if you've not put any out into the world yet, but becoming too fixated on one book can be detrimental to your career as an author. If that one book fails, then you're more likely to bounce back if you have other books you're hopeful about the success of. I like to think about each book as another stone in the path I've been laying as I go. I love to stop and look back at how far I've come and feel proud about where I am. You are greater than one book, no matter how much of yourself you've put into it.
Those are my tips for now. I hope they helped! I publish more on my YouTube channel each week, so if you're looking for more tips on writing, being an author and publishing, then feel free to mosey on over. Find the link in my profile at the top of my linktree.

2022.01.24 13:58 Well505 Transformacija iz skinny-fat u jače tijelo - savjeti oko prehrane i bolje pripreme mesa

Pozdrav.

2022.01.24 13:58 gnarlsalt (Cybs) I performed my extraction as normal, put it in the freezer for 18 hours, and I got absolutely nothing

I’m not sure what happened here? When I blow on the naphtha I see a milky white film so I KNOW the DMT is in there, but it just didn’t crash out in the freezer and I have no idea why. I separated 2 pulls into 3 separate glass pans for greater surface area, but they’re all completely smooth.
Does anybody have any idea what could be happening here? I’ve done this extraction multiple times with great results, but this time has been a total failure. How can I get this DMT out, can I evaporate the naphtha? How do I do that, where do I do that?

2022.01.24 13:58 bhrm How's your two smartphone solution with WFH?

Typically my work provided a work-managed device however I'm starting a new job where I can get my own separate device and expense it. It will be a Google Pixel 6 (yay!) and I can put whatever I want on it (yay!) but I always want to keep personal and work phones separate for sanity and balance. Work will be mainly O365 based and Slack.
Wanted to see how everyone does it here but what do you do to manage personal and work calendars, smart devices in same home? I would like my Google Hub be able to show my next meeting etc.
Should I just set up my new work phone with personal Google profile and add a new work profile to it?
Can my calendars be shared across my Google Calendar view so friends/family can see?

2022.01.24 13:58 Mango_Punch How can creators avoid the feel bads of international shipping?

I've seen this a few times: A game is on KS and the creator provides global shipping estimates. They don't expect enough sales in a lot of domiciles to get economies of scale on freight, and so the estimated shipping is high in those markets.
Backerkit comes out and international shipping is in line with the original estimates (i.e. high). International backers are frustrated at shelling out yet more money (often as much as the base game was on its own). Some drop their pledges, many are left frustrated with a bitter taste in their mouth.
Other than subsidizing international shipping (and taking a loss on those games), how can medium sized creators reduce this friction?

2022.01.24 13:58 marysaka PSA: trust your gut!

Just wanted to stop by and say to anyone who needs to hear this: trust your instincts and gut feelings! Be the bitch if you have to!
My SILs insisted on throwing me a baby shower, but we ended up canceling the larger shower they had planned due to Covid concerns. They were really disappointed, so my husband convinced me to let them do a smaller gathering/celebration. I was still hesitant because I’m 35 weeks and am very anxious about contracting Covid right now, especially leading up to delivery. But I didn’t want to be the bitchy, uptight, overly-concerned sister in law so we went ahead with a small dinneparty against my better judgement and purely out of obligation.
My sister in law texted us last night saying she had to take a Covid test to fly back home and, surprise surprise, it was positive! Great. Now I have been directly exposed and I’m kicking myself since I just knew in my gut that the whole thing was a bad idea and was uncomfortable about it since the beginning.
To anyone who, like me, has issues with being seen as the bad guy or the neurotic one, just trust your instincts and put your foot down! Ultimately, you know what’s best for you, obligations to other people be damned.

2022.01.24 13:58 NektariosK IRIS 24/7 Payment για επαγγελματίες

Καλησπέρα,
Χρησιμοποιεί κάποιος το σύστημα IRIS 24/7 Payment που υπάρχει σε συνεργασία των περισσότερων ελληνικών τραπεζών;
Γνωρίζει κάποιος;
